Mimi Roumenova

October/November 2026

I work in series that unfold around recurring themes and images. The multiplication of the same object, fragments of everyday life, the urban environment, as well as the sensations of alienation, transience and eternity are the natural starting points of my painting. The objects of the image are real people, often self-portraits, but through the painting process they lose their concreteness and identity and become universal images. They exist on the border between the real and the imaginary – dreamy, distanced, with unspoken stories.

Through the repetition of familiar elements and the removal of ordinary moments of the daily rhythm into another space – the space of the canvas, the studio, the gallery – the images are freed from their original context and acquire new meaning. This transformation gives rise to a quiet melancholy – not as sadness, but as a state of contemplation. The compositions stand as visual facts—still, silent, open. They tell stories and suggest connections. The viewer is invited to enter the space between the images, to connect them, and to complete the whole through their own presence and attention.
